Although the trend of volunteering is not necessarily new in Romania, it is not as common here as in Western European countries. Nevertheless, by focusing on the younger generations and recruiting students, NGOs are able to find their volunteers.
These diverse organizations work for social change, and encourage (the youth especially) sustainable thinking for Romania’s future. In addition, quite a few organizations focus on implementing a more widespread sense of social responsibility.

Arc de Triomphe

The Triumphal Arch was first built in wood in 1922 to commemorate the National Union, and was later replaced by the present stone version, designed by the architect Petre Antonescu in 1935. Today the monument is a symbol of Bucharest and one of the city’s main attractions.

Architect Ion Mincu House

The house in which one of the most important architects in Romania lived between 1890 and 1912 is now an important tourist attraction. The house is used as the headquarters of the National Association of Architects , which set up the “Ion Mincu Memorial” on site, which is open to visitors.

Asan House or The Scientists House

The building, which is also a restaurant, is used today as a conference centre by the National Academy, and to host different cultural events.

Cesianu House

Built at the end of the 19th century, Cesianu House used to house the German delegation, which arrived in 1880, after Germany recognized Romania’s independence. The building later became the Comic Theatre “Constantin Tanase” but lost its glory after 1990.

Lens-Vernescu House

Situated near Cismigiu Gardens, Vernescu House was built in 1821 by a rich Romanian nobleman, Filip Lens, and restored in 1993, the building represents an architectural jewel. Today it houses a five-star restaurant. The name ‘Vernescu,’ was given to the house in 1887 when it belonged to Guta Vernescu, an important political figure of the time who set the basis of the Romanian Liberal Party.

Mita Biciclista House

The first woman ever to ride a bike on Bucharest’s streets, Mita Biciclista, lived in this 20th century house. It is said to have been a gift from King Ferdinand I to this woman who was rumoured to have been his mistress.

Bellu Cemetery

The biggest and best-known cemetery in Romania was founded in 1858 and is without a doubt a very special resting place: buried here are many notable Romanian writers, political figures, soldiers and artists. It is decorated with beautiful sculptures and monuments made by famous artists of the time that give the impression of walking through an open-air museum.

Gara de Nord

Bucharest’s Main Train Station was officially opened in 1872 and was first called “Gara Targoviste” according to the old name of the street (now Calea Grivitei St.).

Gara Filaret

In 1869 the first train in Romania stopped at this station carrying passengers (peasants as well as noblemen) between Bucharest and Giurgiu. It was the first section of railway to be laid in Bucharest. After more than a century, in 1960, the railway was taken out, changing the train station into a bus station that is used today to link Bucharest to other cities.

Traian Hall

The old market place is the work of Italian architect Giulio Magni and was finished in 1889. While in the beginning, it was a fish & meat market, after several renovations it became a supermarket that kept its initial architecture and structure.

Hanul Lui Manuc

Hanul Lui Manuc, finished in 1808, belonged to a rich nobleman, called Manuc Bei, who transformed the building into one of the most well-known Inns of its time. Today the place hosts a restaurant and cafe that keep the memory of its glorious heyday alive.

Elisabeta Palace

Built by a young architect named Marcu, for Princess Elisabeta, the Palace was completed in 1936. It was within these palace walls that the king was forced in 1947 by the new communist party to sign his abdication. Today it is still the residence of the Royal Family, and is the permanent residence of Princess Margareta and Prince Radu.

Ghica-Tei Palace

Situated in Plumbuita Park, this palace is a representative monument of neo-classical Italian architecture. Alexandru Ghica, a known nobleman of the time, built it in 1882. Since 1924, it has belonged to the state along with the park and lake that surrounds it. It is quite a wonderful place for getting away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The Palace of the Ministry of Agriculture

Built by the famous Swiss architect Louis Pierre Blanc, the palace was completed 1895. It is still used as the central headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture.

C. E. C. Palace

Built at the beginning of the 20th century by French architect Paul Gottereau in an authentic Renaissance style, the building is genuinely impressive, with its beautiful frontal glass and metal archway. Today, it houses a bank, although ideas of turning it into a museum are in the works. Whatever its function, the monument is a masterpiece of architecture and an emblem of the city.

Impressive due to their simplicity of form and colour, many of Bucharest´s churches are original expressions of Romanian architectural style. While churches were unwelcome in Ceausescu’s Romania, and many of them were neglected or destroyed, or even hidden behind apartment blocks, there are still scores of them to be found in the capital city. Bucharest Churches

Romanian Orthodox Patriarchy Church

Set atop of the Mitropoliei hill (one of the city’s few hills) the Patriarchal Cathedral has been the centerpiece of the Romanian Orthodox faith since the seventeenth century. Next to the church (and closed to the public) is the Patriarchal Palace, which is the residence of Daniel Ciubotea, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Kretzulescu Church

Nestled amid the other historical buildings in Piaţa Revoluţiei, this small redbrick Orthodox Church was built in 1722 by the great chancellor Iordache Kretzulescu and his wife, Safta (daughter of Constantin Brancoveanu) in the Brancovenian architectural style.

Apostles’ Church

One of the oldest churches in Bucharest (with parts dating back to the 16th century and a steeple built in 1715), the Apostles’ Church is brimful of some rather strange portraits that are well-worth seeing.

Armenian Church

Now overlooked by a skyscraper, The Armenian Church is nevertheless one of the largest and best-preserved Orthodox churches in central Bucharest. An exact replica of a cathedral in the Armenian city of Ecmiazin.

Curtea Veche Church

Curtea Veche Church was the church of the former Royal Court (that you can also visit nearby).

Mihai Voda Church

Address: 4 Sapientei St.
One of many churches that were actually moved to make way for the Civic Centre, Mihai Voda was originally constructed in 1601. In 1985 it was moved 285 meters east, on rails, and hidden in its present location behind apartment blocks.

Stavropoleos Church

Address: 6 Postei St.
This is a very interesting old church founded by a Greek monk in the early 18th century. Hidden on a corner near the History Museum and Caru cu Bere, it has outside frescoes and a delightful courtyard behind it, once an inn, giving it a very quiet and pleasant aspect.

Antim Monastery

Address: 29 Mitropolit Antim Ivireanu St.
Another of the moved churches, Antim Monastery was built in the early 18th century. This church is near the People’s House and was in the way of urban renewal projects, so it was given a new foundation, put on rails and simply moved to its present location.

Doamnei Church

Built in 1683. it was the first church in the city to boast octagonal stone pillars.

Casin Monastery

Casin Monastery was built in 1937 and is located near the Arc de Triomphe.

Radu Voda Monastery

The church of the former Radu Vodă Monastery stands on a hill on the banks of the Dâmboviţa, though the construction of the Civic Centre hid it from the river and general view. There was originally a wooden church on this site.

Saint Elefterie Church

Built in the 18th century, St. Elefterie Church is one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in Bucharest.

New Saint George Church

New St. George Church is in the Centre of Bucharest. It was built between 1705 and 1706 and holds the tomb of its founder, Constantin Brancoveanu, Wallachia’s ruler from 1688 to 1714.

St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas Russian Church is located in downtown Bucharest, just off University Square. A Russian Ambassador initiated the building of this Russian Orthodox church in central Bucharest in 1905.

Saint Joseph’s Romano-Catholic Cathedral

Built in redbrick between 1873 and 1884, this Roman Catholic cathedral is an architectural masterpiece combining both Gothic and Roman elements. Organ recitals are held weekly.
