Of all the transport types in Bucharest, the RATB bus network is the most extensive. In fact, RATB’s advertisements state that one can never be further away than five minutes walking distance from a bus stop! There are 121 bus lines, most of which operate in the Municipality of Bucharest. There are even a few bus lines which provide services to the towns and villages which border Bucharest, and whose population usually commutes to Bucharest for work. We have listed the latest ticket prices below, but it is important to remember that the prices sometimes change, so do not forget to occasionally look online!

• Buses

Nine bus lines serving tourist areas near Bucharest were launched in August 2010, so far only available during weekends. They reach monasteries and other tourists sights in villages like Cernica, Mogosoaia, Ciorogarla. The price of a return ticket is RON 15.
There are also night buses in Bucharest, a service  which was started in 2011. The night transportation in Bucharest starts at 23,00 hours and arrive every half an hour between 23,00 and 01,00 and 05,00 and 06,00 in the morning, and every hour between 01,00 and 06,00 hours. The price of a trip is the same as during day time, of RON 1.3. All the night buses have the letter N in front of their number (N101, N102 and so on).
A special tourist bus line was launched in 2011. It is a red double-decker bus that carrier tourists on the Bucharest City Tour route. The bus will ride daily between 10,00 and 22,00 hours on the route Piata Presei Libere, Muzeul Satului, Arcul de Triumf, Piata Victoriei, Calea Victoriei, Palatul Parlamentului, Piata Unirii, Universitate, Piata Romana, Piata Victoriei, Piata Charles de Gaulle, Soseaua Kiseleff and back to Piata Presei Libere.
The route is 15.4 km long and should take 50 minutes. Buses serving this new line arrive every 15 minutes. The price of a ticket on this line is of RON 25 (the equivalent of EUR 5.8) for adults and RON 10 (some EUR 2.2) for children up to 14 years old. The transport card bought for this fee is valid for 24 hours and can be bought from the bus.

• Trams

RATB also operates a complex system of trams and light rails in the Municipality of Bucharest. Besides ten tram lines, there are currently three light rail metro lines (numbered 32, 35 and 41), all of which run in the western part of Bucharest.
Light rail metros use more modern rolling stock than trams and run on separate designated corridors.

• Trolley Buses

There are also trolley buses in Bucharest. The only thing we mention about them is that sometimes their connection to the power lines may break and then you will see the driver getting out and trying to re-arrange the trolley poles to the electricity wires.
In case this takes longer than expected, it is better to get off and take a bus instead.

The local transportation company, RATB runs street-level transportation in Bucharest, which consists of an extensive network of buses, trolleybuses and trams. RATB is a great way of getting around Bucharest. The ground transportation system operates between 05:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. daily. Tickets must be purchased beforehand and validated upon boarding.
RATB has recently changed the system and now uses plastic cards instead of paper tickets. You can buy  a plastic card and then re-charge it with amounts of money covering several trips, or you can charge it with monthly or daily subscriptions, valid on one bus, tram or trolley line or on several. The card must be validated after boarding the bus using the orange devices located throughout the bus by keeping the card in front of the machine for some seconds.
A one-way trip is 1.3 RON. Any transfer to another means of transport implies a new validation. Express buses require a different kind of card for validation (carton one, similar to the ones for the metro, but cannot be used in the metro system).

The Activ Card also available; ‘Activ’ is just the name of a simple card which must be validated at the control machine situated in each bus. When issuing an Activ card, the minimum amount that can be loaded (without adding a monthly pass option) is RON 30, and the maximum amount is RON 50. When loading the e-purse at the same time with a RATB monthly pass, the minimum amount that can be loaded is RON 50. When loading the e-purse at the same time with a Metrorex monthly pass, the minimum amount that can be loaded is RON 3, and the maximum amount is 50.

The express bus system is more useful for reaching destinations outside the city centre, asonly a few express buses actually pass through the centre itself. Two- or 10-journey tickets, as well as monthly passes, are available for these buses. RATB maps can be found at kiosks near bus and tram stops. Parking is one of the biggest infrastructure issues in Bucharest. While most office buildings and shopping centres in Bucharest have large enough parking lots, the municipality itself does not offer many options in this area. Public car parks are under construction, but it may take a couple of years to be finalized.

To park the car near your home, the municipality offers the option to rent parking places outside your block of flats. After you buy your place, you can mark it using your car registration number. Avoid using someone else’s paid spot as they may damage your car if you do so a couple of times in a row (people get very angry about this).

If you have paid for a parking space and someone parked there, call the institution, company, or person that gave you the parking space first. There is a parking office in the jurisdiction of every sector. Or, you can use the Romanian method: stop your car next to the vehicle in your spot and simply honk your horn until they come and move their car. It is surprisingly effective. If they do not come, or it happens more than once, lift up their windscreen wipers: this will let them know they are in the wrong spot! You can also call the police in your sector to report the violation: they probably  will not tow the car (because they tow cars based on a predetermined plan), but they may fine them.

This is also a paid car park during the day. But you can park for free at night in front of the Romanian Athenaeum (although usually during the evening you will see people helping you to park and asking for money in exchange of ‘watching out’ for your car).

For those of you who have brought along your four-legged family members (or any other pets, for that matter), you may have concerns about how they are transported back and forth between countries. Bucharest has two airports, one of which is the main for the city: Henri Coanda airport, or  Otopeni airport (OTP). Most of the bigger airlines operate flights on this airport. A second airport is Aurel Vlaicu – Baneasa airport – where low-cost airlines usually operate.
Otopeni airport is located north of Bucharest, 15 km away from the city. To get there, you can either get a bus – the 385 express bus from downtown Bucharest, or a taxi. There is no  metro line yet to connect the airport to the metro system in Bucharest, but authorities have started working on one.

The taxi fare from downtown Bucharest to airport (or the other way around) should be of around RON 35 (less than EUR 10), depending on traffic. Make sure to take a cab with a fare below RON 2 per km, you will see it written on its door. They might try to convince you to pay the trip back to the city but you should not do so, as they will get a customer back.

Henri Coanda International Airport, located north of the Bucharest metropolitan area, in the town of Otopeni, Ilfov and, (The “GOOD” airport: traditional airlines)

Aurel Vlaicu International Airport, Baneasa is located just 8 km north of the Bucharest city centre and is accessible by RATB buses 131, 335; Airport Express 783; RATB tramway 5; and of course by taxi. (The “BAD” airport: low cost airlines, cheap, but total chaos).

Currently the airport has one terminal divided into three inter-connected buildings: the International Departures Hall, the International Arrivals Hall and the Domestic Flights Hall, found at the ground level of the Arrivals Hall. A new terminal was inaugurated in 2011. You can find the Information Office quite easily in the public area of each hall. There you will find information concerning scheduled flights, arrival and departure times, transfers, airport services and facilities offered in the airport. When looking into flights to either airports, it is advisable to look around for deals, you could do this online at various sites s through your local travel agent (see travel agent section). You want to get the best deal and the only real way to do this is by doing some research. If you want any further details contact the airports themselves.

In the boarding hall (1st floor) and also in the passport control area, you can find telephones for emergency situations, and to access the following services: emergency medical assistance, salon “Mother and Child”, and airport information.
In the airport you also have access to bars and restaurants, banks and ATM’s, a post office, tour operators, a pharmacy, VAT cash refund, shops, exchange offices, internet access, hotel welcome desks, hairdressers, a secure luggage holding service and a supermarket (Billa). There are some plugs for your laptop, which is great as the bars in the airport have high prices and bad services. A good hint we got from one of our readers was the business lounge in the airport, which can be accessed for around EUR 20, without booking. If your flight is delayed, they offer snacks and drinks included in the price.

The public parking lots at Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport charge in 60-minute units, or intervals (with a minimum charge of one unit). Any unit started is considered a full unit, so watch your time carefully! Parking lot information is displayed at each cash desk in the parking lots. The tariff is 3 RON/hour. In order to avoid unpleasant situations, pay careful attention to all displayed information as well as to the indications of the airport security agents. Do not enter any parking lot without the ticket issued when opening the barrier! If the ticket does not issue, notify the parking lot agent.  Do not lose the parking ticket, since the exit barrier can be accessed only with the paid parking ticket!

Upon entering the parking lot, the driver is automatically issued a magnetic ticket. Do notDo notDo not forget to pay for the parking before getting into your car! You can pay at two cash desks located on the upper-level of the parking lot and one cash desk on the ground floor (Parking Dispatch). In addition to the time you have paid for, you receive 15 extra minutes to get to your car and leave the parking lot. There are two exit barriers at the top level and two exit barriers at the ground floor. The exit barriers are opened automatically after you have inserted the paid magnetic ticket into the barrier reader.

Transportation to and from airport

Express Bus 783 offers daily service to the city centre, with stops at Baneasa Airport, Piata Presei Libere, Piata Victoriei, Piata Romana, Piata Universitatii and Piata Unirii. The schedule runs Monday-Friday from 05:30 a.m. To 08:00 p.m. (every 15 minutes), from 08:30 p.m. To 11:00 p.m. (every 30 minute); and Saturday-Sunday and legal holidays from 05:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (every 30 minutes).
The bus departs from the International Departures Hall and the journey downtown takes approximately 40 minutes. The fare is 7 RON for a magnetic card valid for two trips (a 2-way ticket for 7 RON has to be purchased for bus 783, whereas 1-way tickets can be purchased for bus 780- see below!) and a monthly ticket costs 80 RON. The cards can be purchased at the ticket counter in the Domestic Flights Hall. The desk operates daily from 06:00 a.m. to 09:00 p.m. Cards must be validated upon boarding the bus, using the machines.

Express Bus 780: To get from Henri Coanda Airport to the main train station (Gara de Nord) just takes bus 780. The fee for one trip is about 3.5 lei and 27 lei for ten trips. A monthly ticket costs 80 lei. As an alternative you can also take bus 783 to Piata Victoriei and connect to the subway, or to Piata Presei Libere connecting to bus 205 direction Gara de Nord.
WATCH OUT: There are two different types of tickets sold for the 2 express buses 780 and 783 at Henri Coanda airport. It is incredible, but true, that one of our readers bought the wrong ticket and was fined (50 RON) during a control at Baneasa airport meant to target tourists for exactly these two different tickets.

Baneasa Airport is located 10 km from downtown Bucharest, and is used for charter flights and scheduled low-cost flights to/from European destinations. From autumn 2011, the airport will no longer host night flights, the authorities have announced.
Prepare for chaos while checking in, it is a mess. But that is the price you pay in Romania for cheap airlines. You hardly ever find your queue, and prepare for heat in the summer, as the AC usually is not strong enough for the number of people in the building. The list of budget airlines flying out of Bucharest got smaller last year with the crisis affecting airlines badly. Both Sky Europe and MyAir are out of business. There are still a few though, and their websites have been updated and are all in English.

Transportation from Baneasa Airport

Public transportation between Baneasa airport and the city centre:

Bus 131 to downtown Bucharest; Bus 205 to the main train station (Gara de Nord); Bus 301 to downtown Bucharest;  Bus 335 to downtown Bucharest

Take care when in crossing the street to buy your tickets at the ticket box opposite the airport. In order to get there safely, you have to exit the airport and walk to the left, go to the main street and keep on walking on the left hand side until the big junction. There you can cross the street with a traffic light and then walk 50 meters back to the bus stop and purchase your tickets. If you do not have a lot of luggage, then this is easy and recommendable.
If you go by taxi, do NOT take any taxi from the taxi stands in front of the airport, usually they will not drive with their meter turned on and they will try to cheat you. Rather, always call a cab at +40 21-9494 or +40 21-9444 (or see Taxi section in this chapter) and give them your name. They will give you the number of the cab they are sending for you. The fare to downtown Bucharest is about 20 RON.

You can also avoid being cheated by taking a cab that is dropping somebody off. In this case, the cab driver should be honest.
If you are picking somebody up for the airport and have to wait, parking at the airport costs approximately 4 RON per hour; facing the airport, the parking lot is on your left. It is worth the money to avoid additional stress.

Biking in Bucharest

Even though two years ago Bucharest did not seem to be the place for biking, the city has positively changed in this sense. A lot of bikes can be rented for free in different parks, eg.: Herastrau Park, on the left side of the main entrance of the Park (Piata Charles de Gaulle). Different NGOs, companies and even the City Hall have done a good job at developing the parks and offering more leisure time activities for free.
Hint! If you want to rent a bike, do not forget your passport or ID card and be there early in order to avoid queuing… If you want avoid queues of people, go to Rue du Pain bakery (see bakery section) – they have 3 bikes they rent out for free, and French Bakery also does the same!
