(A) Photography enthusiasts, managers, doctors, lawyers, IT people and architects meet each year at Fotogenica to share their experiences with photography, to interact with known photographers and learn new things.

Participate in the outdoor photography class (held in English by Popa Vasile) and the practical sessions of the underwater photography with Dinu Lazar, nude photography with Catalin Chitucea, nocturnal photography with Daniel Baltat or astrophotography with Catalin Paduraru. You’ll have the occasion of meeting interesting English and German speaking participants.

Popa Vasile, surgeon and photo buff since high school years has held photography seminars on outdoor photography, portraits, nudes and dental photography in the last 10 years, which have enabled many people to finally get the images they desire.

Our main sponsors, Nikon and Epson will provide you with various equipment to test.

Participation fee: 125eur. Couples pay only one fee.

Accomodation: 126eur single room / 164eur double room (price for 2 people)

The price includes 2 days of accomodation, breakfast, supper on Friday night, lunch on Saturday and supper/barbeque and campfire Saturday night.

From Communism to Democracy

This fascinating minibus tour takes you places that most expats living in the north and tourists never see: typical communist-era neighborhoods that really haven’t changed much since communism; as well as the seats of power and the edifices of a collapsed (?) ideology. Gain insight into how modern Romanians live in a city that is a relic and daily reminder of its history.
Our expert guide (a Bucharest native) will take you on a journey to deep within the heart of the city’s cultural and political history: fifty years of communism, twenty years of democracy, and the “Golden Age” of the interwar period have all shaped the city in different and profound ways.
After visiting many engaging sites, neighbourhoods and a traditional market, we will have an open discussion for your questions and comments in a hotel for approx. 45 minutes. The discussion will be moderated by our guide.

London Street Bakery Dining Room,

This week’s review is written in anticipation of the opening next week of the exciting new London Street Bakery Dining Room. This new restaurant venture has been solely inspired by Rachel Sargent, English investment banker turned restaurateur. You may say: a bold move indeed. However Rachel, who comes from a family of Chefs, has been operating the London Street Bakery as a business selling fine cakes in Bucharest  for the last two years. The restaurant therefore would seem like the natural progression.

Rachel is joined in this new venture by a team of creative and internationally experienced Romanian Chefs and the daily menu on offer will focus firmly on the best seasonal local produce.

Two preliminary visits have been made so far for research purposes. The venture could be described as a meeting between a British Gastro Pub and modern Romanian, aiming for great food in a relaxed atmosphere. The decor has a Brit feel to it, from the wallpaper to the banquet seating. There is a bar area where you can sip imported English Ale and a restaurant area catering for around 50. On the menu, the venison in chocolate sauce with polenta looked very interesting. Blood sausages, steak and Guinness pie have yet to be tried.

The Restaurant is situated in the Green Lakes Residence in Baneasa and will be open from 8.30am for coffee and cakes, through dinner and closing at 11pm daily. The British institution of afternoon tea with a large selection of fine teas and homemade scones will also be available daily. Sounds good to me!

The London Street Bakery will also be hosting regular events, such as wine tastings and ‘meeting the suppliers’ evenings where clients can meet the suppliers of fine local produce.  This is an exciting new proposition and I am looking forward to sampling more of the menu.

The snowball question is standing at RON 1,800 ron for one lucky contestant given the chance to win all by answering one guessable question. The organizers promise a raffle, prizes given for best team name and British snacks available during the evening.

The ballet, which includes 60 dancers previously performed in Romania the shows, such as ‘The Nutcracker’, ‘Giselle’, among others.

Tickets for the ‘Swan lake’ show cost between RON 100 and RON 200 and can be bought online from eventim.ro.

On the same stage will be the band Vrelo, a combination of six female voices, drums and bass. The Serbian band’s music was on the soundtrack of the movie “Life is a miracle“ and collaborated with the famous Emir Kusturica.

The Lemon Bucket Orkestra, the third performance of the evening, is based on Toronto, Canada, and its music mixes gipsy punk and gipsy jazz with Balkan influences. The group is made of 14 artists from different countries.

Tickets for the May 16 concert cost RON 25 and can be bought on the door.

The organizers are also raising money for a variety of charities and NGOs via the exhibition. A book of photos and prints of individual photos will be available for sale, with all proceeds going to charity. This year, the exhibition will support Mia and her Children, Asociatia Speranta Pentru Sanatate (Hope for Health), Our Lady of Mercy in Romania, Parada, Hospice Casa Sperentei, Mia (Casa Valentina), Fundatia Inocenti, Light into Europe and Second Chance.
